How to revamp your guard house Barrier Gate System in the most effective & efficient way!
First of all, WHY Barrier Gate System?
The reason is simple, Barrier Gate is The Front Liner of SECURITY. Therefore, the aim is CLEAR:
Filter the strangers BEFORE they enter the premises.
Secondly, it is there to make sure every day, every time when everyone reach home, they will enjoy:
● Smooth Guard House Traffic on barrier gate
● Card Reader Detection Without Stopping the Car
● Preventing Airbnb Guests from Using the Residence Lane
● Stopping Cloned Card from Accessing the Residence Lane
But what you get now is the opposite, am I right?
Actually, you’re not alone.
I understand how you feel, that’s the reason I am writing you this letter.
Let me share with you the 5 Golden Rules of Designing the BEST Barrier Gate System for guard houses.
By knowing these Golden Rules, you can reduce a lot of hustles and save a lot of and money by:
1. Optimizing the layout
2. Determining the resident and visitor lanes
3. Utilizing the existing barrier gate motor
You may not even do a lot of changes on your current barrier gate system’s layout!
Here’s The 5 Golden Rules
Rules #1:
Determine the number of lanes needed.
When determining the number of lanes needed for a barrier gate system requires careful consideration of several factors, including:
1. Number of units.
The number of units of the house is an essential factor in determining the number of lanes needed. During peak hours, when traffic is highest, it is necessary to have sufficient lanes to ensure a smooth flow of vehicles in and out of the property.
2. Design of guard house.
The design of the guard house is also a crucial factor in determining the number of lanes needed. ANPR, LF, and HF proximity readers can only work with a roof, while UHF can work with and without a roof.
3. Size of the guard house.
The size of the guard house is another factor to consider when determining the number of lanes needed. The length and width of the guard house should be considered when deciding on the placement of the barrier gates.
4. Title of properties.
The title of properties, whether strata title or individual title, can also influence the number of lanes needed. For instance, properties with individual titles may have more vehicles entering and leaving, requiring additional lanes.
Overall, a thorough analysis of these factors is necessary to ensure that the barrier gate system has the appropriate number of lanes to facilitate traffic flow and provide optimal security.
Rules #2
Select the Right Access Control System
1. Determine the size and needs of your car park area and Barrier Gate.
Consider the number of parking spaces, whether the area is covered or uncovered, and if the barrier gate system will be used for internal door access as well. This will help determine the type and quantity of access control devices required.
2. Evaluate the different access control options for your barrier gate system
a) LF Proximity card reader - This is the most basic and common type of card reader for access control. The cards are easy to clone and are considered less secure compared to other options. However, they are cost-effective and suitable for smaller communities or organizations with fewer security concerns.
b) HF Mifare card reader - This type of card reader uses encrypted communication between the card and the reader, making it difficult to clone or copy the card. It provides higher security compared to LF proximity card readers, making it suitable for organizations with higher security needs, such as government buildings, banks, or research facilities.
c) UHF Card reader - UHF card readers come in two types: encrypted and unencrypted. Encrypted UHF card readers provide higher security compared to unencrypted ones, but they are also more expensive. UHF card readers can read cards from a greater distance compared to LF and HF readers, making them suitable for high traffic areas such as parking lots or large communities.
d) ANPR AI Camera - This is the latest technology for access control systems, and it utilizes AI algorithms to recognize and verify license plates. ANPR AI Cameras are considered the most secure access control option, as they do not require any physical cards that can be cloned or copied. They are suitable for organizations or communities with a high level of security concerns or those that have experienced security breaches due to cloned cards.
When evaluating the different access control options, it is important to consider the level of security required, the size of the organization or community, and the budget available. It is also important to consult with security experts or vendors to determine which option is the best fit for the specific needs and requirements of the organization or community.
Consider the purpose of the barrier gate system and the level of security required for your car park area. This will help determine the type of access control system needed to meet your security needs.
Rules #3
Design the Right Lightning Surges Protection System
Lightning Protection System and Surge Protection System are both designed to protect electronic equipment from voltage surges.
However, the main difference between them is the source of the voltage surge.
A lightning protection system is designed to protect a building and its occupants from direct or indirect lightning strikes. It includes lightning rods, conductors, and grounding systems to provide a path for the lightning current to flow safely to the ground, preventing damage to the building and its electrical systems.
In Malaysia, the standard for lightning protection systems is MS IEC 62305. This standard outlines the requirements for the design, installation, inspection, and maintenance of lightning protection systems. The standard is issued by the Department of Standards Malaysia (ST), which is the national standards body of Malaysia.
It is important to note that compliance with MS IEC 62305 is mandatory for all buildings in Malaysia, and failure to comply may result in fines or other penalties. Additionally, it is recommended to consult with a qualified lightning protection system specialist or engineer to ensure that the system is designed and installed correctly.
Here is the link to the Standards Malaysia website where you can find information on the Malaysian Standard MS IEC 62305 on lightning protection: https://www.jsm.gov.my/ms-iec-62305-series-protection-against-lightning/
You can also find the standard at the following link:
https://www.jsm.gov.my/images/standard/MS-IEC_62305-1_2015.pdf
On the other hand, a surge protection system is designed to protect electronic equipment from voltage surges caused by switching events, power outages, and other factors. It includes surge protection devices (SPDs) that divert excess voltage to ground, protecting the equipment from damage.
In Malaysia,
the guideline for surge protection systems is provided by the Standards Malaysia (ST) under the MS IEC 62305 standard. This standard is titled "Protection Against Lightning" and includes guidance on surge protection systems for buildings and other structures.
It covers the design, installation, inspection, and maintenance of these systems to minimize the risk of damage caused by lightning strikes and other electrical surges.
Here is a link to the Standard Technical (ST) Guidelines for the Protection of Electronic Equipment Against Surges issued by the Energy Commission of Malaysia:
https://www.st.gov.my/ms/standardization/guidelines/st-g-ex-electronics-electrical/1185-guideline-for-the-protection-of-electronic-equipment-against-surges.html
When designing a Surge Protection System for an automated barrier gate system, some factors to consider include:
- The type of equipment being protected: Different types of equipment may require different levels of protection. For example, sensitive electronic equipment may require higher levels of protection than mechanical equipment.
- The voltage rating of the equipment: Surge protection devices are rated for different voltage levels. It's important to choose an SPD that can handle the voltage rating of the equipment being protected.
- The location of the equipment: Equipment located outdoors or in areas with frequent lightning strikes may require additional protection.
- The type of power supply: Different power supplies may require different types of SPDs. For example, DC power supplies may require SPDs designed specifically for DC voltage.
When designing the Lightning Surges Protection system, here are some factors to consider:
- Earthing installation: Proper earthing is crucial in lightning protection. The grounding system should be designed to provide a low impedance path for lightning current to flow safely to the ground.
- Down conductor to earth: A down conductor is a conductor that connects the lightning protection system to the ground. It should be designed to minimize the impedance of the path and avoid creating any sharp bends or kinks.
- Surge Protection Devices (SPDs): SPDs are also an important part of lightning protection. They should be installed at critical points in the electrical system, such as the main power supply, communication lines, and equipment cabinets.
- Method of statement: The method of statement outlines the procedures for installing and testing the lightning protection system. It should include details on the materials to be used, installation procedures, and testing requirements.
Overall, designing the right lightning surges protection system requires careful consideration of the equipment being protected, the location of the equipment, and the power supply. A well-designed protection system can help prevent equipment damage and ensure the reliable operation of the barrier gate system.
Rules #4
Choose the right barrier gate equipment
When choosing the right barrier gate equipment, you need to consider the following factors:
- Height of Roof: If the height of the roof is below 3 meters, you need to use a folding barrier gate arm that can be easily lifted without hitting the roof.
- Speed of barrier gate: Choose a barrier gate with a suitable speed motor. A 3-second barrier gate speed motor is the most common choice as it has a longer lifespan. However, for heavy traffic areas, you may need a higher speed motor, such as a 1.2 to 1.8 second motor, to ensure faster access and exit.
- Length of arm: The length of the arm is also an important factor to consider. A shorter arm has a longer lifespan and requires less maintenance. You can choose a 3-meter to 4-meter telescopic arm for easy site adjustment.
- Local Product brand: Choose a local product brand that has a good reputation for easy maintenance and spare part restocking.
- Blue Speed motor and auto-sensing fan: Look for a barrier gate with a Blue Speed motor and auto-sensing fan. The Blue Speed motor is a high-quality motor that ensures a longer lifespan and smoother operation. The auto-sensing fan helps to keep the motor cool and prolongs its lifespan.
- Reasonable price with longer product warranty: Choose a barrier gate that offers a reasonable price with a longer product warranty that includes labor and spare parts. This will help you save money on maintenance and repairs in the long run.
Rules #5
Identify and select the right vendor
To identify and select the right vendor to work with in designing and implementing the system, consider the following factors:
- Experience: Look for a vendor with a proven track record of successful projects in the field you require. Ask for references and case studies.
- Expertise: Choose a vendor with a well-trained team who has expertise in designing, building, and maintaining the system you require.
- Range of solutions: Select a vendor who offers a wide range of solutions and can provide customized options that meet your specific needs.
- Warranty support: Check the warranty support offered by the vendor and ensure that it is comprehensive enough to reduce system downtime.
- Reputation and reviews: Research the reputation and reviews of the vendor from previous clients to get a sense of their level of customer service and satisfaction.
Let me tell you a true story…
Six years ago, I received a call from a staff member in the contract department of IJM Land. She asked me to attend a meeting with her colleagues from other departments.
During the meeting, they kept emphasizing the following points:
1. How to prevent lightning surge problems.
2. Factors to consider when designing the Access Control System.
3. What is our Method of Statement (MOS) for the installation of an automatic Barrier Gate Access System
After the meeting, they requested me to solve their problem on the current project which encountered a 2 serious problem:
1) Lightning Surges
2) Malfunction on CCTV & Barrier Gate Access.
During the rectification, I found there is 2 major problem:
1) Poor Earthing System
2) Poor Cable Management
Click here to know how we solve it
Result after rectify the Barrier Gate
After we rectify the problem and monitored the system for 2 weeks, we found that the problem had been solved. Even during the rainy season, the system still worked fine and didn’t cause any problem.
In 2018, IJM Land started to engage us for a new Guard House Security Project – Safira Apartment. We get involved from designing stages till the completion of installation. After the completion and handover for 2 years. IJM was surprised with the 0% defect on the system.
Why did IJM Land S2 choose us? The reason is simple and obvious:
